Melilla, spanish enclave on the mediterranean coast of Morocco, in the eastern zone of Rif, attached aministratively to the province of Málaga. The city is the railway terminus of the network which serves the mountainous area of Rif towards the interior of the grounds and which allows the export of fruit, fish, zinc, lead, iron. The principal activities of the city are the conditioning of fish, the shipbuilding, the sawmills and the flour mills. Founded by phéniciens under the name of rusaddir, it passed to the hands of carthaginois, the romans, the empire byzantin and various berber dynasties before being conquered by spain in 1497. The revolt of the officers of the garrison of Melilla in 1936 was the prelude to the Spanish civil war.
